The information in this section is taken from the Lorien
Trust Role Playing System Handbook.
Special Effects.
Special effects are used at all Lorien Trust events, particularly in and
around the area of the ritual circle. Some effects used, such as strobe
lighting, UV lighting and smoke machines, can be hazardous if you suffer
from a medical condition which may be affected by special effects of any
sort. Please be careful when moving around any area where special effects
may be used. If you wish to participate in, or watch a ritual, please
check with the ritual circle technical crew before the ritual begins.
They will be able to tell you which special effects will be used in the
ritual.
Booking On the Gate.
If you book on the gate at any Lorien Trust event you will be given a
booking pack that contains event information and a character form. You
will need to fill in this character form and take it to Event Control;
They will then be able to produce your character card for you. The Lorien
Trust makes every effort to ensure that no one has to wait too long to
receive their character card, but during busy periods you may have to
queue. The Lorien Trust would like to thank you in advance for your forbearance
on this matter.
Identifying Lorien Trust Staff.
All Lorien Trust staff will carry a photo identification card, signed
by Andy King and with the member of staff's name and department printed
on it. If you have a complaint to make about any member of the Lorien
Trust staff, ask to see their staff card and take their name and department
(and, if they are wearing a ref tabard, the number stencilled in black
on the tabard). Take this information to Games Control, who will be able
to give you the name of the head of department responsible for the member
of staff concerned and either pass your complaint on to them or arrange
for you to speak to them in person. The Lorien Trust makes every effort
to address all complaints made about members of staff. The more information
you can provide about the member of staff concerned, the more likely we
are to be able to deal with your complaint quickly and efficiently.
All attendees of Lorien Trust events do so under the Lorien
Trust Rules and Regulations and
the Lorien Trust Site Rules.
You are also asked to make every effort not to obstruct out of character
staff in the course of their duties, particularly if they are members
of the first aid department responding to an emergency. If you are asked
to move aside by a first aider, or asked to make way for the ambulance,
please do so as fast as possible.
Referees
Referees in the Lorien Trust are responsible for running plot, ensuring
that players and monsters play within the system rules, monitoring the
safety of combat situations, answering any queries players may have regarding
the rules and helping to make the game enjoyable and fair for all participants.
Lorien Trust referees fit into one of five categories, each of which has
different responsibilities. These categories are detailed below.
If you ask a referee for help, particularly with regard
to the rules or specific monsters, please bear in mind that they may have
to consult with a senior or more experienced member of staff before they
can assist you. All referees will make every effort to answer your questions
accurately within the shortest possible time.
Battle Marshal
The primary responsibility of a battle marshal is to keep combats away
from unsafe areas (for example away from tents and fences), particularly
on the battlefield at the Gathering, when battle marshals may be stationed
at specific points on the field to direct the fighting away from an out
of character hazard. Battle marshals are also responsible for collecting
any weapons lost or damaged during a combat (such as arrows and crossbow
bolts). You do not have to pass a Lorien Trust test to become a battle
marshal. All battle marshals wear a blue tabard with the word 'battle'
written on it when on duty.
Marshal
Marshals are primarily responsible for answering general rules queries
and refereeing small-scale player combats and monster encounters. Marshals
do not have the authority to pronounce a character dead; If a character
is at risk of dying during an encounter refereed by a marshal, the marshal
must ask for the assistance of a referee or senior referee. Marshals have
a limited knowledge of current plot. All marshals have passed the Lorien
Trust marshal's test. All marshals wear a numbered, luminous yellow tabard
that is blank, or has the word 'marshal' written on it when on duty.
Referee
Referees are primarily responsible for answering rules queries and refereeing
more complex encounters and combats than those dealt with by the marshals.
Referees have demonstrated a competent level of refereeing skill within
the Lorien Role Playing System, have a detailed knowledge of the rules
and have a more comprehensive knowledge of current plot than marshals.
Referees are able to answer most rules queries, but may refer you to a
senior referee for clarification of complex issues.
Referees have the authority to pronounce a character dead,
after checking all the details of the situation. All referees have passed
the Lorien Trust referee's test. All referees wear a numbered, luminous
yellow tabard with the word 'ref' written on it when on duty.
Faction Referee
Faction referees have demonstrated the same level of competence and knowledge
as a referee, but their primary responsibility is to the members and plot
of their own faction. They will have a detailed knowledge of plot lines
within their faction and can advise new or inexperienced players on groups
within their faction.
Any queries concerning a particular faction should be addressed
to the appropriate faction referee. All faction referees have passed the
Lorien Trust's referee's test. All faction referees wear a numbered, luminous
yellow tabard with their faction and the words 'fac ref' written on it
when on duty.
Senior Referee
Senior referees are chosen for their experience and proven refereeing
skills. Senior referees may make judgement calls on complex rules queries,
although some issues may be referred to the head referee or the head of
plot before a final decision is made. Senior referees have a comprehensive
understanding of the rules and access to detailed information on Lorien
Trust plot. Senior referees can be identified by the bright orange tops
marked with a number and senior referee.
Head Referee
The head referee is responsible for briefing all other referees and for
making a final decision on any query that requires interpretation or alteration
of the rules. The head referee wears a luminous yellow tabard with either
the words 'head ref' or their name written on it while on duty. Games
Control will be able to tell you the name of the current head referee.
Head of Plot
The head of plot has overall responsibility for all Lorien Trust, faction
and guild plot run at Lorien Trust events and is responsible for making
a final decision on any plot-related query. The head of plot wears a luminous
yellow tabard with either the words 'head of plot' or their name written
on it while on duty. Games Control will be able to tell you the name of
the current head of plot.
